Published on the occasion of Ataru Sato’s solo exhibition, “111 / triple one”, at Tokyo’s KOSAKU KANECHIKA gallery, Super Sensitive collects the Chiba-born artist’s work from 2008-21. A graduate of the Kyoto University of the Arts, Sato deconstructs his emotions — fear, lust, romance etc. — through drawing. Each dense work pulls from memory to remake, or rework, a feeling and within his complete oeuvre, we find an artist equipped with a rare inner percipience.
Super Sensitive, which will be the artist’s first publication since 2009, contains that conversation, an introduction by Keiichi Tanami and 115 works. Each is relatively small in scale — Sato sleeps, lives and works in the same space — and all of the drawings, paintings and three-dimensional boxes endeavour to make sense of self, humanity and world in some measure.
